Implementing Change: A Registry Software Perspective

During this presentation we will meet 3 individuals that work for hospital registry software vendors. We will hear from an individual involved with updating software, another responsible for developing plans of implementation, and from someone that provides client support.

The Association of Medicaid Expansion with Overall Survival among Cancer Patients

In 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law in order to expand access to healthcare. The act provides states financial incentives to expand Medicaid eligibility to adults aged 18-64 years with household income up to 138% federal poverty line regardless of parental status. 24 states and the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid eligibility on January 1, 2024, with more states opting in during later years. To date, 11 states have yet to expand Medicaid. Previous studies have reported associated Medicaid expansion with reduced insurance rate, a shift to early-stage diagnosis, improved receipt of treatment, and improved short-term survival. It is unknown, however, whether the expansion is associated with long-term survival (4-5 years) among individuals with cancer

Partnerships and Advocacy Lead to Success

As a small association, NCRA recognizes that strong partnerships and coalition building can lead to policy outcomes that best support NCRA's membership, and those of the cancer surveillance community. This presentation will review NCRA's advocacy approach, noting the role of partnerships and grass-roots advocacy to reach success.

Ahmedin Jemal, DVM, PhD, is senior vice president of the Surveillance & Health Equity Science Department of the American Cancer Society (ACS). His primary goal has been to build a strong interdisciplinary team of cancer surveillance, health services, tobacco control, and disparities researchers in order to strengthen the scientific basis for broad and equitable application of cancer prevention and control in the United States and worldwide. Jemal has a broad interest in the areas of surveillance and health services research, with a focus on disparities and social determinants of health and the effects of public health policies and programs on access to cancer care and outcomes in order to accelerate the application of known interventions broadly and equitably to all populations. His work has informed public health policies and served as a catalyst for etiologic research. For example, his findings on the positive effects of the Affordable Care Act on cancer care and outcomes have been used to defend the law, while his findings on emerging cancer trends in young adults have motivated large scale etiologic researches.

Lori Swain, MS

Lori Swain has served 23 years as NCRA’s executive director. Under her leadership, NCRA membership has more than doubled from 2,500 to over 6,500, making it the largest professional society of cancer surveillance professionals in the world. Swain has over 30 years of experience in non-profit executive management, program and project development, and communications. She has B.S. in Physical Geography/Environmental Science from SUNY, College at Buffalo, and an M.S. in Environmental Communications and Education, SUNY, ESF. Lori serves on several boards including Friends of Georgetown Huntington’s Disease Center Board Member; Board of Advisors Member & Chair - Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine, Advisory Board on Genetic Counseling Licensure; Board Member, North American Association for Central Cancer Registries. Accolades include; Awardee Aggie Wolf Defender of Choice Award 2016; Constance Percy Distinguished Service Award – North American Association for Central Cancer Registries 2012.
