Sharing Approaches to Central Registry Staff Training: Successes and Challenges

During this session we will hear from several central registries on approaches they have used to train and engage new and existing registry staff. They will share experiences and solutions they have found for various training obstacles.

Following the presentation we will have a Q&A where participants are welcome to share success and challenges they have experienced in their registry.

Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS)

Jeremy Laws is the Operations Manager of OCISS, the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System in Columbus, Ohio. Previously he was a Cancer Registrar at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He has also worked for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and served for 2 years with the Peace Corps in Moldova (eastern Europe).

Andrea Sipin-Baliwas, MS

Los Angeles Cancer Surveillance Program - USC

Andrea Sipin-Baliwas is the Director of Registry Operations for the Los Angeles Cancer Surveillance Program (LA CSP). She earned her B.S. in Biology and her M.S. degree in Medical Sciences before becoming a CTR. She is an active member of NAACCR and serves as the Co-Chair of the NAACCR Professional Development Steering Committee, serves on the JRM Editorial Advisory Board and other NCRA committees, and is the Education Co-Chair for the California Cancer Registrars Association. She leads recruitment and retention efforts for LA CSP and is an advocate for students entering into the cancer registry world. 

Angela Meisner, M.P.H

Senior Epidemiologist

New Mexico Tumor Rgistry

Angela Meisner, M.P.H., is Senior Epidemiologist at the New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR). Over 20 years ago, she began her career in epidemiology and public health as a high school intern at the NMTR. She holds a Bachelor’s in Science from the University of New Mexico, and a Master’s in Public Health with a focus in epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. At the NMTR, she analyzes and disseminates cancer surveillance data, manages the NMTR’s research portfolio, mentors professionals and students who utilize NMTR’s resources, and serves as a liaison to public health and academic circles as well as the greater community. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries. 

Christine Rizk, RHIA

Pennsylvania State Cancer Registry

Christine Rizk (pronounced rizz-ick) Graduated from University of Cincinnati with bachelor’s degree in health information management and obtained the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) credential shortly after.  Started with the Pennsylvania State Cancer Registry in 2019 as a registry specialist with focus in quality assurance.  In 2021  promoted to Source Record Unit Manager, of PA Cancer Registry.   

La'Tawnya Roby, BS, CTR

Mississippi Cancer Registry

La’Tawnya Roby obtained her Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management in 2005. La’Tawyna has been with the Mississippi Cancer Registry since June 2005. started as a Cancer Registrar while passing the CTR exam in 2007. She   was promoted to Data Quality Analyst/Educational Trainer in 2009 and has remained in that position until becoming Manager in August 2019.
