Mentorship Roundtable: Data Quality

This session will explore strategies for enhancing the quality of cancer reporting through effective quality control measures. Expert panelists will share insights on key aspects of data quality in cancer reporting, including the development of data quality plans and the diverse approaches used by cancer registries.
Key topics include:
• Data Quality: The significance of accurate, consistent, and timely cancer data, along with best practices to ensure data integrity throughout the reporting process.
• Data Quality Plans: Strategies for developing comprehensive data quality plans that align with regulatory standards and enhance reporting accuracy.
• Comparative Approaches in Cancer Registries: Examining various methods adopted by different registries to maintain high-quality data, with a focus on opportunities for improvement and standardization.
The session will also feature an interactive breakout discussion, allowing participants to share experiences, address challenges, and collaborate on solutions to improve cancer reporting practices.

Alicia joined the Texas Central Cancer Registry in June of 2022 as the Quality Assurance Team Lead. She completed an Allied Health Registered Nursing program focused on rural helathcare populations in 2017 & has been ODS certified since 2019. Prior to working in the public health space her cancer registry experience in the private sector includes contributing to & leading teams providing oncology registry services for small individual rural healthcare facilities & large urban health systems with CoC certified cancer programs. She enjoys giving back to the cancer registry community through volunteer activities. She currently coordinates the Texas Oncology Data Association’s Mentoring Initiative and served as the 2024 Midwest Nominating Committee Member with the National Cancer Registrar’s Association. She is grateful to be engaged in a profession that contributes to both advancing cancer treatment & improving cancer patient outcomes.

Barbara Dearmon-Neyland, BS, ODS-C

Barbara Dearmon Neyland, BS, ODS-C has worked in the cancer registry field since 1987. She received her BS in healthcare services from the University of Phoenix. Barbara is a Quality Control Coordinator at the University of Miami, School of Medicine at Florida Cancer Data Systems. She previously worked for Ascension Clinical Analytics-Registry Services Ascension Data Institute as the manager of abstraction quality. She worked in Oncology Support Services at Ascension, St. Vincent’s Healthcare in Jacksonville, FL, for 15 years. She has an extensive background in managing cancer registry operations, maintaining compliance with state reporting, and monitoring compliance with standards by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Barbara Dearmon-Neyland, BS, ODS-C is a certified cancer registrar and received her credentials in 1990 from the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA).

Nancy Lebrun began her career in cancer registry as an auditor for the comparative effectiveness research project in 2011 She received her certification in tumor registry (CTR) now ODS in 2013 and continued working for the Rhode island /cancer /registry as the ETC , enhanced data specialist and cancer registrar. She received her bachelor’s of science with a concentration in healthcare management from Fisher college in 2019 and is currently the director of Cancer information Systems for the Rhode Island Cancer Registry at the hospital association Rhode Island
